Driving Tour Of Covered Bridges In Bucks County PA
Start In New Hope
The tour is a loop through Bucks County so you can really start anywhere along the way, but we recommend New Hope as your starting point.
New Hope is along the Delaware River and Delaware Canal with a lot of shops and restaurants so you can spend some time exploring before hitting the road. Or, if you are eager to start your tour, then put New Hope on your list for a future day trip so you can enjoy all it has to offer.
Make sure to pop into Ferry Market to get a cup of coffee at Sky Roast Coffee and a hearty breakfast at The Pork Shack before starting the tour.
It might not be a covered bridge, but you can walk across the New Hope-Lambertville Bridge to take in beautiful views of the Delaware River and cross into New Jersey.
Bowman’s Hill Tower And Van Sandt Covered Bridge
When you leave New Hope, you will travel south on River Road to get to the Van Sandt Covered Bridge.
Before visiting the bridge, make a stop at Bowman’s Hill Tower in Washington Crossing Historic Park. You will enjoy a breathtaking view of Bucks County and the Delaware River from the top of the tower.
From Bowman’s Hill Tower, you will continue on to Covered Bridge Road and drive through Van Sandt Covered Bridge.
Loux, Cabin Run, Frankenfield, Erwinna, And Uhlerstown Covered Bridges
It’s about a 25-minute drive from Van Sandt Covered Bridge to Loux Covered Bridge. The drive is on back roads so you will enjoy the beautiful Bucks County countryside along the way.
The Loux, Cabin Run, Frankenfield, Erwinna, and Uhlerstown Covered Bridges are close to each other. The drive time from one bridge to another is between 5 and 10 minutes.
Pro Tip – If you follow GPS from the Loux Covered Bridge to the Cabin Run Covered Bridge, then you will turn off Dark Hollow Road onto Covered Bridge Road. After checking out Cabin Run Covered Bridge, you will need to get back to Dark Hollow Road to proceed to the Frankenfield Covered Bridge. You can turn around at Cabin Run Covered Bridge and take Covered Bridge Road back to Dark Hollow Road. Or you can drive through Cabin Run Covered Bridge and take a loop back to Loux Covered Bridge in order to return to Dark Hollow Road.
Second Pro Tip – You can drive through Uhlerstown Covered Bridge. However, Uhlerstown Hill Road on the other side of the bridge is a one-way road and is closed from December – April. So depending on the timing of your visit, you might not be able to drive through the bridge.
Ringing Rocks County Park
Yay! At this point, you are halfway through the driving tour with six bridges down and six more to go!
This is a great time to get out of the car and stretch your legs. Luckily, Ringing Rocks County Park is only about 10 minutes from the Uhlerstown Covered Bridge.
Ringing Rocks County Park has bathrooms and walking trails, but the best feature is the boulder field! Make sure to pack sneakers and a hammer. You will want to explore the boulder field and strike a boulder with a hammer to hear it ring.
If you decide to skip Ringing Rocks, then plan a future trip. Make it a date with a picnic lunch and an adventure exploring the park.
Knechts And Sheard’s Covered Bridges
The next stop is Knechts Covered Bridge, which is about 20 minutes from Ringing Rocks County Park.
Knechts and Sheard’s Covered Bridges are only about 15 minutes from each other. You will travel along more rural roads during the drive and take in Bucks County’s beauty.
You will also be getting ready for lunch! After Sheard’s Covered Bridge, you will head to Perkasie for food and more covered bridges.
Moods And South Perkasie Covered Bridges
Moods Covered Bridge is about 15 minutes from Sheard’s Covered Bridge. There is a parking lot located off Blooming Glen Road where Moods Covered Bridge is located. You can pull into the lot to get a good view of the bridge.
From Moods Covered Bridge, you will venture into downtown Perkasie to eat lunch. C&C Cafe, Rise and Grind Cafe, and The Ram are all great options. While in Perkasie, don’t forget to check out some of the cute shops too!
After exploring downtown Perkasie, you will head over to the South Perkasie Covered Bridge, which is in Lenape Park. Unfortunately, this bridge was damaged during a storm and is the only covered bridge that you can’t drive or walk through. There is a fence around the bridge while it is being repaired.
Before leaving Perkasie to visit the last two bridges, take some time to enjoy Lenape Park. There are paved walking paths, a dog park, and twin footbridges.
Pine Valley Covered Bridge And Peace Valley Park
From Perkasie, you will head to Pine Valley Covered Bridge in New Britain. It will take about 15 minutes to drive from South Perkasie Covered Bridge to Pine Valley Covered Bridge.
Pine Valley Covered Bridge is the busiest in terms of vehicle traffic. So, pull into Covered Bridge Park if you want to take a moment to look at the bridge.
Peace Valley Park is close to Pine Valley Covered Bridge. You will not want to miss this spectacular park in New Britain Township. There are paved paths for walking or a bike ride. Also, the park is home to Lake Galena. You can rent canoes, kayaks, and paddleboats and spend some time on the lake.
With so much to do at Peace Valley Park, you may not be able to take it all in. You can definitely plan a day trip to Peace Valley and the surrounding area with all the activities it offers.
Schofield Ford Covered Bridge
The last of the Bucks County bridges! Schofield Ford Covered Bridge is about a 30-minute drive from Pine Valley Covered Bridge.
Schofield Ford Covered Bridge is located in Tyler State Park. You cannot drive through the bridge so you will park at the closest entrance. It’s a short walk to the bridge, but you will go down some stairs.
This bridge was our favorite since you could walk through it without having to worry about vehicle traffic. There are cutouts on the side of the bridge that you can look out for views of Neshaminy Creek.
If you spend time exploring some of the parks in this itinerary, then it will be around dinner time when you finish up. Before anyone gets hangry, head over to Newtown to grab something to eat. Harvest Seasonal Grill, Vecchia Osteria, Isaac Newton’s, and Rocco’s are all great options.
